Almost Killed The Chairman Of The Board With A Cash Register

Eight years ago I managed a small software company…

Roni, one of the finest gentleman I had the pleasure of working with, was our Chairman as well as the biggest investor in the company…

He’d liquor me up in the middle of the day just because he fancied a drink and didn’t want to drink alone.

He had a thousand stories and told each of them a million times.

But he had one irritating habit…

He configured his email so that every time a sale notification came in, his computer would make a loud sound of a cash register ringing. Ka-ching!

It rattled everyone.

And I couldn’t get him to shut the damn thing off.


One particularly ‘sales-challenged’ August, when I saw that I wasn’t going to make payroll, I decided to do something despicable.

I forced my team to send out a ‘back to school’ promotion email.

They all hated it – “we’re not spammers”- they said.

But I had to make payroll, so I forced them to send out the email to our 10,000 customers.

A minute after we sent the email, Roni’s cash register rang.

A minute later – another ring.

And another.

And then they started coming in seconds apart.

For two hours straight the office echoed with cash register sounds.

Work halted completely and Roni – This 67-year old gentleman – was so happy I thought he was going to have a heart attack.

This particular promotion brought in more sales than two months’ worth of advertising on Google, our main source of sales up to that point.
